Hanging Your Wreath & Door Leaner

What types of doors can I hang a wreath on?

Wreaths can be hung on most door types with the right hardware:

• Wood doors: Use an over-the-door wreath hanger (no tools or nails needed) or a sturdy adhesive hook rated for your wreath's weight.
• Metal doors: Avoid nails. Use a magnetic hook designed for metal doors, or an over-the-door hanger. Confirm the hook's magnetic strength supports your wreath's weight before hanging.
• Glass doors (full-light or partial-light): Use a suction-cup hook rated for glass, or drape a ribbon over the top of the door frame. Never apply adhesive directly to glass.
• Storm doors: Most storm doors have a narrow frame and a door closer mechanism. Use a slim over-the-door hook designed for storm doors, or hang the wreath on the primary door behind it and confirm there is enough clearance for the storm door to close fully without pressing against the wreath.

How do I hang a wreath on a storm door without damaging it?

Storm doors are thinner and often have glass panels and an automatic closer, so standard hooks may not fit. We recommend a slim-profile magnetic hook or a storm-door wreath hanger with a low-profile bracket. Before hanging, open and close the storm door fully to confirm the wreath clears the door frame, the threshold, and the primary door behind it. If the storm door presses against the wreath, hang the wreath on the primary door instead.

How do I know if my door can support the weight?

Check the weight limit printed on your hanger or hook packaging and compare it to your wreath's weight. When in doubt, choose a hanger with a higher weight rating than you think you need — hardware stress builds over time, especially on doors that open and close frequently. For extra-large or full wreaths, a reinforced over-the-door hook with a wide top plate distributes weight more evenly.

Will a wreath hanger scratch or dent my door?

Over-the-door hangers can leave marks on painted or finished doors over time, especially with frequent use. To protect your door:

• Wrap the contact points of metal hangers with felt tape or foam padding.
• Choose hangers with a rubber or felt-lined back.
• Avoid hooks that grip by tension against a glass panel.
• Periodically check that the hanger hasn't shifted and is not pressing unevenly against the door edge.

How much clearance do I need for the wreath to hang properly?

As a general rule, leave at least 1–2 inches of clearance between the bottom of the wreath and the door threshold or handle hardware, and confirm the wreath does not swing into the door frame when the door opens. For storm doors, confirm clearance on both sides — between the wreath and the storm door glass, and between the wreath and the primary door.

Door Leaner Setup & Support

Where should I place a door leaner?

Door leaners are designed to stand against a door, wall, or flat surface — no hanging required. Lean the piece against a door at a slight angle so it rests securely. Common placements include front doors (interior side), entryway walls, fireplace surrounds, and blank interior walls.

How do I keep a door leaner from sliding?

Place a non-slip mat, felt pads, or rubber bumpers at the base of the leaner to prevent it from sliding on hard floors. On carpet, the natural friction usually keeps it in place. Avoid placing leaners in high-traffic areas where they could be knocked over.

Can I lean a door leaner against an exterior door?

Door leaners are designed primarily for interior use. If used near an exterior door, keep them protected from wind, direct rain, and prolonged sun exposure, as these conditions can shorten the life of the materials and embellishments.

Coordinating a Wreath with a Door Leaner

How do I style a wreath and door leaner together?

The most cohesive look comes from matching the color palette, seasonal theme, or botanical elements across both pieces. For example, if your wreath features eucalyptus and white ribbon, carry those same elements into the door leaner below it. You do not need to match exactly — varying scale and texture between the two pieces adds visual interest while keeping the look intentional.

Should the wreath or the door leaner be the focal point?

Typically the wreath is the primary focal point at eye level, while the door leaner anchors the base and adds height and dimension. Keep the door leaner's colors slightly less saturated or its elements slightly smaller than the wreath so the eye travels naturally from wreath to leaner without competing focal points.

Off-Season Care & Storage

How should I store my wreath when it's not in use?

Store wreaths in a round, lidded wreath storage box or container to protect their shape. Keep the box in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight, humidity, and temperature extremes — avoid garages and attics where conditions fluctuate widely. Stuff the interior of the wreath loosely with tissue paper or a plastic bag to help it hold its shape during storage.

How should I store a door leaner off-season?

Store door leaners upright or lay them flat in a large, lidded bin. Wrap delicate elements in tissue paper or bubble wrap and place them so nothing heavy presses down on the embellishments. As with wreaths, choose a cool, dry storage space.

How do I refresh my wreath or door leaner after storage?

Gently fluff and reshape any bent stems, leaves, or ribbons by hand. A quick pass with a hair dryer on the lowest heat setting can help reset stubborn ribbon bows. If any dried floral elements have loosened, a small dot of hot glue can resecure them. Avoid steam, as moisture can damage dried botanicals and certain finishes.
